NSW: Man believed dead in west Sydney shooting

SYDNEY, April 9 AAP - A man is believed to be dead after a shooting in Sydney.

The man was shot in Hamilton Street, Fairfield, in the city's west, about 7pm (AEST),
a police spokesman said.

"We believe he has died but that's still to be confirmed at this stage," the spokesman said.

The incident is not thought to be linked to a recent series of shootings in western
Sydney, he said.

Boxer Bassam Chami, 26, and his friend Ibrahim Assad, 27, were murdered in Granville
on March 30, sparking a number of alleged revenge shootings.

The NSW government announced last week it would commit 108 police officers to its new
Middle Eastern crime squad to investigate shootings dating back to 2003 in the area.
