NT:Six detainees hospitalised, 11 arrested= 2
Late Thursday afternoon a disturbance at the same centre involving several detainees
led to unrest between other detainees, the spokesman said.
One asylum seeker was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The spokesman confirmed about 20 detainees started protest action just outside the perimeter.
He said police and staff engaged the group, brought the situation under control quickly
and returned the detainees to the facility.
Photographs published by the Northern Territory News show police wearing riot gear.
The NT News is reporting that four young men were bashed as tensions between ethnic
groups flared.
The detainees told the News Ltd paper they were mentally exhausted after being locked
up for two years.
The Immigration spokesman told AAP the first of the "small altercations" occurred on
Wednesday afternoon and that a number of detainees were treated at the scene for minor
cuts and bruises.
The detention centre's service provider Serco will investigate and report back to the
Immigration Department.
